Girls Watch Out! Smoking Can Make You Obese

By Naore Rome Smoking to lose weight? Am I getting it right, or are my ears playing tricks with me? I am still in a right frame of mind and my ears have lost no power of audibility, then it must be the gravity of the situation that has shocked me, shaking me violently off my reverie. It is a heart throbbing experience, contemplating on the means we use to get to our own selfish ends, trampling any opposition ruthlessly and giving a deaf ear to the pleas for mercy of the vanquished, forgetting that its our own body were crushing into bits and tatters, shattering into pieces. I still cannot comprehend or come into terms with the maddening trend, where girls take up a wholehearted effort and dedicated approach to smoking in order to lose weight. The grit and determination of this young generation of self-assured bevy of teeny-boppers to lose weight is so intense, displaying a maturity beyond their years that even an older woman would pride to boot about. My heart goes out to them, they who are hot and happening and they who throng the hot and happening places, with cigarettes in their lips, puffing the thoughts of obesity and overweight away. I am not sympathizing with their cause, rather I understand their plight. Its we, the older generation that has left indelible marks and set umpteen numbers of examples, leading the misguided bunch of youngsters to the road to perdition. We have been living on a daily diet of chemical-laden pills for any and every little ailments that befall us. We are just a bundle of contradictions, a mixture of opposites, who preach what we dont practice. We pass across the message to the young generation that smoking is injurious to health, though we keep smoking all along. Tired of our lip-service, they look out for ways to fend for themselves. And left to themselves, they are sucked in by the myth that smoking, an appetite killer, can contain obesity. With the Internet opening floodgates of information, bordering on total insanity at times, the young crowds have their hands full with theories and axioms on weight loss. As they scratch only the rim, they have their eyes set on the toppings, never for a moment relishing the rotting taste inside. They follow a simple logic: smoking leads to no appetite, no appetite leads to no food, no food leads to weight loss. But, my dear girl, life would be a bed of roses, if things were that simple. The Mama Mias of the world are not that stupid. Smoking can have severe repercussions and ramifications on weight loss itself; your weight loss strategy might fire back its cannons making you all the more obese. Anyone would call upon the heavens to stand by the fact that smoking kills appetite. But few realize that when they smoke to lose weight, they lose their body to nicotine. You are bargaining for a Faustian deal, exchanging the welfare of your body for a glamorous look that is momentary. Well, grow up, Dr. Faustus had no happy ending, and you are playing with fire that will only engulf you in its flames with time. Once nicotine gets into your system, it is hard to completely remove its toxins. Say, you have been smoking and you have regained the figure you would kill for, but what next?? Would you give up the means as you have got to your ends? Smoking is not a commodity you can pick and throw as you wish; it has its own set of rules. To enlighten you with a simple example, the craving for your usual after dinner smoke would haunt you like a recurring nightmare if you try to give up smoking. The only way out is to have a rich sugary food that can compensate for the decreased sugar level in your body after you have quit smoking. So, you either continue smoking or stuff yourselves with cakes and chocolates. Ahem, not a nice situation to be in. There is nothing like a free lunch, it always comes with a bill attached. When you sell your body to nicotine for that glossy look, you are the ultimate loser. You end up smoking, and you are still overweight and obese. So girls, better keep away from smoking, if you dont want to get into the vicious cycle of smoking and obesity. You dont need logic to comprehend Smoking can make you Obese. Are You Fit To Date?

By Allie Ochs Anybody can find a date. If you have a computer, youve got a date. You know how it works: sign up, write a profile and the highway to passion is yours. Once set up, the system should work like a charm. Someone should respond and viola, youve got a date. In the real world we blow it! Dan and Linda exchanged meaningless e-mail chatter forever, but learned nothing about each other. Dan doesnt know that Linda is his mothers age. Linda has no clue that Dan lives with his girlfriend. We exhaust our energy by e-mailing with people whom we would never introduce to our parents. Misrepresentation on the Internet is big. Janice, a fitness enthusiast, was excited about her e-mail exchange with Rob, who seemed to share her interest. They wrote about mountain biking and golfing. Janice never asked when he last engaged in these activities. When they met, it was obvious that he was not fit. He was a happy couch potato, who wanted to impress Janice. What a waste of time. In face-to-face dates, we goof up as we quickly seize up our date. That silly tie with comic characters he is wearing, 10 strikes against him. We are done! The magic chemistry didnt happen. We never find out that Mr. Comic Tie runs a successful business, is a great person with loyal family relations. He has the character we are looking for, but we couldnt get past that silly tie. We are not fit to date. We are ill equipped to manage dates and to ask pertinent questions. In spite of abundant dating advice, most never move beyond the facade. What type of dater are you? If you are a recreational dater, you are playing the field. It feels good to be wanted and even better to choose. You dated so many, but even if you like someone, you cant move ahead. Someone better might come along. Why should you settle for Jack, if you can meet Joe tomorrow? If you are a mission dater you are serious and discriminating. You should easily bypass those who dont qualify no matter how gorgeous. Yet, the opposite is the case. Even serious daters are distracted by superficial attributes and end up with the wrong person. Most singles are decent human beings, yet we dont give each other a chance dismissing people in a snap. The most vital attribute for a healthy relationship is character. Just ask someone who is happily married. Today, we skip over character and go for the superficial stuff. And that has to change! If you are serious, you mean business. You are tired of wasting your time and ready to change, right? Bottom line: nothing will change until you change. Put in another way: everything changes when you do. 4 important changes you can make right now: BE TRUTHFUL in your profile. This is huge. When you mingle in the singles market, you paint your best picture. Putting your best foot forward doesnt mean inflating your image. There is only one of you. No need to create a second identity. My client showed me his profile. I am not kidding, but the person in front of me was not the same. He told me that his 3 children live with him, but in his profile he claimed to have no children He quoted his body type as athletic, yet he was severely overweight. He is not a bad person, just misrepresented. The key to compatibility is being real, instead of pretending. This may not guarantee huge interest, but if you are serious about quality, not quantity, a true profile will attract someone who is also truthful. DIG DEEPER in your email exchange. Ask questions about their lives, values, hobbies and interests. Rephrase questions in subsequent e-mails and compare answers. Go back to their profile and look for discrepancies. To verify age, ask when they graduated. To find out if they really like hiking, ask where they hike. They could be hiking in the National Geographic only. Check employment, what do they do during a workday? Do they enjoy their work? The only thing you risk by asking is that your new friend will drop out of the loop. That may be a good thing. BRING UP ISSUES that are important. If family means a lot, talk about it. If you love traveling, raise this topic. It may be politics or social issues. Start talking about it. If a healthy lifestyle is important address it. No point in involving yourself with someone who has no interest in that. Whatever your values or interests are, use the e-mail exchange to clarify. Read between the lines. This practice will help you to determine compatibility early in the game. Shared values are important for long-term commitment. Dont make the mistake so many singles make. They use the e-mail exchange to impress each other and end up with little real information. REMEMBER why you are seeking someone. If you want to increase your circle of friends, by all means have fun. But if you are searching for love, dig deeper. Talk about what matters. Ask the questions that are important. Dont let the sheer number of singles distract you from the character you really seek. Keep in mind; most singles are vulnerable with a desire to be loved just like you. Be smart, trust your gut instinct and cut to the chase! 2006 Allie Ochs Allie Ochs is a speaker, relationship coach and author of: Are You Fit To Love? Communication Problems In Relationships: 3 Ways to Overcome Communication Problems in Relationships

By Anne Amore Communication problems in relationships are a primary cause of failed marriages, broken hearts and ruined dreams. To guarantee that your relationship doesn’t crash and burn as a result of these problems, you need to develop good communication skills in relationships. This is the first step on the pathway to create blissful relationships. Good communication in romantic relationships is based on 3 core skills or communication habits which are: 1. Clarity Think you’ve explained yourself clearly? Think again. Double check. Make sure that your significant other really does understand what you want. Try recording conversations that you have with your lover or with friends and then transcribe the recording. When you see what’s written down, you’ll understand why we have such communication problems in relationships. We are so lazy with our thinking and explanations. We leave sentences half-finished and we expect our partners to finish the sentence for us. Often they do. But don’t be surprised if sometimes they end it differently than you would have done. You say, ‘Honey, would you take the trash out…?’ (meaning tonight before the garbage truck comes). He thinks, ‘Yeah, I’ll take the trash out tomorrow sometime.’ Unless you are married to a super psychic, don’t expect your partner to be a mind reader. Get clarity in your thinking and words. And of course, it works both ways. Make sure to check that you are clearly understanding what your partner is communicating and asking for. 2. Specificity Success gurus affirm what the army has known for a long time, that minds thrive on clear specific orders. It’s no different in relationships. If you have specific needs, you need to communicate those specific needs to your partner. It’s no good you saying, ‘I want you to take me somewhere nice this weekend,’ and then complaining when he leads you into Dunkin’ Donuts. It will help big time if you can say instead, ‘I really want to get away this weekend just the two of us so we can reconnect in an intimate way. Let’s go up to Lake Whatever on Friday night, and book into that sweet little motel, The Love Inn, on Highway 95. We’ll take a bottle of champagne, order pizza, and give each other exotic massages by candle light.’ The clearer and more specific you are in expressing your thoughts, feelings and desires, the less room there is for any communication problems in relationships. 3. Honesty Honesty is not a blunt instrument that you use to beat your partner over the head with. Honesty in relationship communication involves first being honest with yourself. This requires self-knowledge … and self-knowledge comes from non-judgemental observation of the way you think and act. By watching your mind, your emotions, like a passive witness sat in the back of a movie theatre watching the movie of your daily life, you will develop greater perspective. From this greater perspective you can be truly honest with yourself. From this greater self-understanding, you will understand others better too. And you will be able to communicate honestly and kindly. Honesty need always to be tempered by kindness and love for relationships to thrive. There are ways of being honest without causing pain to others. This kind of honesty will end many of the communication problems in relationships. Want a ‘fairy tale’ relationship? They do exist! The Top Ten Baby Names of the 20th Century - The Mother of All Baby Name Lists

By Neil Street We often see “top lists” of baby names — top ten names of 2005, the trendiest, the coolest, the most popular names of the decade — and so on. Readers find these lists endlessly fascinating, often using such lists to help them choose a name for their own offspring. But now, in what is most likely the first appearance of this set of data, comes the mother of all names lists: The Top Ten Baby Names Of The 20th Century (USA). For parents who want to know what the really enduring names are, at least in the United States, this is the list to beat all lists. This definitive compilation of data, spanning the years from 1900 to 1999, is based on my original analysis of birth data. This “best of the century” list, based on Social Security Card applications for births in the United States, determines and ranks the top 10 boys’ names and the top 10 girls’ names spanning the entire 20th century. It was compiled using the same methodology as used by the Social Security Administration in compiling their most popular names of the decade lists, i.e. by totaling the raw numbers. But in this case, the time period studied is the entire 20th Century. There are plenty of surprises: Donald in the # 13 all time spot; Dorothy in the # 9 spot for girls, followed by Betty at # 10, to name a few. It may surprise people to see Patricia at the # 2 all-time girl’s spot. Plus, there are some fascinating trends revealed by the data, such as the top 10 boys’ names accounting for nearly 35 million names over the century, while the top 10 girls’ account for only about 15 million names, clearly demonstrating the huge variety of girls’ names versus boys’ names, going back to 1900. Just as they do today, Biblical names make a strong showing on the list. On the boy’s side, no fewer than six biblical names appear in the all-time top ten; on the girl’s side, two names have biblical roots. This discrepancy between boys’ and girls’ biblical names, with boys’ always being more popular, holds true today. Given the greater volatility over time of girls’ names, it is not surprising to see that some superstars of the 20th Century, such as Linda, which ranks # 3 in the century, has fallen precipitously — all the way to # 416 by 2005. Poor Betty, # 10 in the 20th Century, has fared even worse — the name has not ranked in the top 1000 since squeaking onto the list at # 918 in 1996. What names are still hot? Amazingly, five boys’ names from the top dozen of the 20th Century - Michael, Daniel, Christopher, Joseph and William - are still in the top twelve today. For girls, only Elizabeth (#12 in 2005) shows that kind of endurance. For more than 100 years, parents have been very traditional in picking boys’ names but ready to take a chance on something new when it comes to girls’ names. So what were the Top Baby Names of 20th Century? Here are the top ten for each gender: Boys: 1 James 2 John 3 Robert 4 Michael 5 William 6 David 7 Richard 8 Joseph 9 Charles 10 Thomas Girls: 1 Mary 2 Patricia 3 Linda 4 Barbara 5 Jennifer 6 Elizabeth 7 Margaret 8 Susan 9 Dorothy 10 Betty How are the superstars of the 20th Century, James and Mary, performing today? True to form, the boy’s name, James, is still not far from the top. It ranked # 17 in 2005. Mary, while not slumping like some of her sister names, is not doing so well. In 2005, she was # 73. More ominous for Mary, she has been trending downward since she last held the # 1 spot back in 1961. But even if Mary falls out of the top 100, it may only be temporary. Consider the name Emily, the hottest girl’s name for the last ten years. 45 years ago, when Mary was # 1, Emily was # 265. Names, like most fashions, ebb and flow with the tastes of the day. Neil Street is co-publisher of the baby names website Baby Names Garden, where you can read more of his work on Top Baby Names of the 20th Century. He is also the editor of the Celebrity Baby Names Blog which tracks the names that celebrities are giving to their children. Do You Jiggle When You Walk?

By Jaikob Mateo Today I stopped by my favorite coffee shop in Berkeley, right across from the campus and noticed this student, couldnt have been 20 years old. Now this kid was obese, no I mean OBESE. I felt bad, really bad, you know like empathy?! He jiggled when he walked and everyone would turn and stare the way I would turn at a beautiful girl passing me by. Anyway, it got me thinking about composition, specifically body composition. And how it affects the way we move, the way we fit into society. The way we fit into our own thinking. How we live within ourselves. Do you ever think about how you fit into society? Are you PHAT or fat? Do you count yourself as one of the obese? Today there are more people obese then in any other time in history, and I think most of them are here in the USA. And the reasons are pretty simple simple as too much food and not enough exercise. However, even with all the focus on weight loss, you still may not be completely changing your lifestyle or bad health habits. Why is that? Truthfully, I think its because maybe you feel safer being fat, but more on that on another day. Today lets talk about your body composition. You know the shape of your body and how it affects your life or your workout. Maybe if understanding the one aspect of losing weight that you need to understand better and how it relates to weight loss you could better deal with toning up. First, Im sure you understand that “obesity” is not just a condition involving too much weight, but also a disease that poses multiple health risks. Im not going to beat you down with those risks, since I assume you must know them by now. If not, just do a search on Google or Yahoo on Obesity. Only you know what affects it has on your physical performance, which might be as simple as walking up a flight of stairs or heading to the mailbox. To get started in conquering obesity, you should educate yourself on how to achieve better health. Im thinking you may not even be aware of the fat-to-muscle ratio, which is crucial to losing the right type of weight. You see, if youre not combining good eating habits, cardio exercise, and weight training, then youre not helping your body at all and most likely even doing it harm. These three things together create the synergy needed to lose weight while maintaining muscle. For instance, if you eat a good, balanced diet and go to the gym but only do cardio to lose weight you will in fact lose weight, but unfortunately, you will lose the wrong kind of weight. The weight youre dropping is not the fat weight you need to lose, but muscle. When this happens, your body’s metabolism and muscles are inefficient, you may be getting thinner but youll notice youre also getting weak. If youre eating right and only doing cardio exercises, what you are is a skinny fat person. With all the same health risks as a fat person. Sure, youre losing weight but again, it will be muscle weight. Therefore, the fat-to-muscle ratio drops, giving you a soft, undefined appearance. Additionally, because your fat is not lost, all of the health risks such as diabetes 2, heart attack, and other serious diseases still exist. Therefore, it is essential that you use a combination of good nutrition with the cardio and weight training to lose the fat and not the muscle. Keep in mind that you do not have to overdo the weight training but you do need to incorporate it into your daily routine. Resistance training is what shapes and sculpts the muscles, bringing the fat-to-muscle to a healthy ratio. Keep in mind that if you had a dozen people undergoing a body composition evaluation, all of them obese, you would discover not only a laundry list as to why the person is obese, but also come to understand that the same weight loss and exercise program would not work for every person. As mentioned, most people become obese simply because they start into bad eating habits and stop exercising. However, another reason for obesity relates to health. Some people have inherited or developed health issues that cause them to be overweight, such as thyroid problems. In connection with that, a person can experience significant weight gain because of medications being taken for health issues. Therefore, creating a one-for-all weight loss or exercise program simply wouldnt work. Through a body composition evaluation, all of these factors will be exposed so the appropriate program can be developed. This is important since what I want is for you to enjoy eating and exercising, as well as benefit from it. However, if youre not on the right type of program based on your body composition, you could be taking the long way to the body you want. The key to losing weight, the right type of weight, and living a healthy lifestyle is to remember that a poor fat-to-muscle ratio will have a negative impact on both. Sadly, more then 45% of the population is overweight, with many of them being at the level of obesity. When the body has high composition levels of fat, not only is there great risk of serious disease but also injury to your knees, ankles, and your back. It also affects your mental health, often throwing you into a tailspin of depression. Thats something I really empathize with. I see it all the time at the gym around February and March when members begin to quit. The best thing you can do for yourself is to check your body’s composition level so you know exactly the amount of fat youre carrying. In reaching the right fat-to-muscle ratio, it is important you know your body needs some fat to function. For one thing, an appropriate level of fat helps to cushion internal organs and nerve conduction. However, when the fat is over a healthy ratio, trouble begins. You need to measure your body’s composition on a regular basis with the use of a caliper, which can be purchased at a minimal cost. Remember, by understanding your bodys composition, what is happening inside your body both good and bad, you can take control to lose the excess fat. Armed with this newfound information, you will no longer have to guess where you are with your fat-to-muscle ratio, you will know. -Jaikob Jaikob Mateo is an Internet consultant and a voracious student of human nature. College Without A High School Diploma - Possible?

By Graham Johnson Dont give up your dream of enrolling in an online university just because you didnt get your high school diploma. Although most colleges (online and otherwise) require a high school diploma to enroll in any program that grants bachelor degrees, there are still several options available to students who lack the paper to prove that they graduated high school. See which choice will fit you best: Community College Most community colleges assume that a certain percentage of their population will apply without a high school diploma, and they plan accordingly. They often have programs specifically designed to help people who show potential succeed without the diploma. Since more and more community colleges are beginning to create online programs, many new options are opened up for distance learners. GED Some colleges will allow students to enroll with a GED. Designed to be a high school equivalency test, the GED proves that passing students are comparable with the current graduating class of seniors. Non-traditional student status Students who have been out of high school for a long time may qualify for non-traditional student status. This means that the student has been outside of school for an extended period of time and is older than the average student. Almost all colleges have an organization dedicated to helping these students find success. You may be able to bypass traditional requirements (such as the high school diploma) by proving you have relevant life experience and demonstrated maturity. Concurrent enrollment If you still want to get your high school diploma, you may be able to take college at the same time youre working on your high school credits. Many colleges have special programs that negotiate concurrent enrollment, which allows a student to attend two schools at the same time. The good part is that many high schools allow students to earn double high school credit by completing college courses which means you may be able to kill two birds with one stone. What To Take With You On A Date: Part II

By Peter Portero Although there are so things you know you should take on a date, there are others that you may easily forget due to the excitement of the moment. Creating a checklist before your date is a good way to remember everything you need. Here are other things you may want to bring along as well. If you are a guy, you may want to take your date flowers. It is important to be careful with this display of affection. Going overboard too early in a relationship may scare her away. If you are a female and are picking up your date, you may want to take something as well. Be original with a bottle of wine, or even a case of beer! If you are going to be outdoors you will want to remember to dress appropriately. If it is cool out, you may want to take a jacket along with you. Taking an umbrella is also a good idea if rain is in the forecast. Being uncomfortable is one sure fire way to ruin the date. Be sure to check the weather forecast in advance. If you are attending an event that needs tickets, make sure that you have them with you. Imagine how you will feel if you show up at the baseball stadium and realize the tickets are at home on your kitchen table. This can ruin the whole evening so make sure that you double check that you have everything you need in order to gain admittance to the event.
